ABOUT THE DEMO
Faces is the third game in the "tris" series by game designer Alexey
Pajitnov. In Faces, the object is to assemble falling segments of a face
into completed faces, which will then be removed from the screen. If at
any time a column of face segments stacks up to the top of the screen,
the game is over. More playing information can be found in the
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE section of this file.
This is an interactive demo. You will be able to play difficulty level 1
of this demo up to 1500 points, at which point the game will end. You may
then play another game or exit. When you are finished playing the demo,
select "Quit" from the Main Menu.

The Faces demo requires an IBM PC or compatible with at least 512K of
memory (384K for CGA). It will run in VGA, EGA, CGA, Tandy 1000 or

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The demo version of Faces is an interactive demo. This means that
you will be able to play the game; however, it will end when you reach
1500 points. Following are the instructions you need in order to play
the game:
About Faces...
The object of Faces is to assemble chin, mouth, nose, eyes and forehead
segments of a face into a complete face that will then be removed from
the playing screen. When a perfect face is completed (one that uses all
five segments of the same personality), all "blocked" segments of the
column the face was on will be removed down to the next "open" segment.
If a mixed face (a complete face with segments of different
personalities) is completed, the "blocked" segment directly below the
completed face will be removed. When a face is completed, it will be
transferred to the left hand side of the screen. The game is over if a
column of blocked pieces reaches the top of the playing screen.
In this demo version of Faces, you will be unable to access the
following things on the Main Menu: Level, Advanced Mode, Controls,
Players, Load Graphics and Unload Graphics. These features have been
disabled for the demo version of the game because only level 1 has
been included with the demo.
How to play:
To complete a face, you must assemble the face segments in order: chin,
lips, nose, eyes and then top. If you place any segment out of order
(for example, placing a chin segment on a nose segment), that piece
will become "blocked."
To complete a perfect face, you need to assemble all five face pieces
of only one personality. (You gain more points for completing a perfect
face than by completing a face with mixed segments.) You can distinguish
the different personalities from each other because each has its own
separate background color or pattern.
Each face segment has two sides. Both sides will be of the same type
(chin, nose, etc.) but may be of a different personality. "Flipping"
the segment(s) will reveal the other side(s). You can also transpose the
position of the two segments. This is known as "swapping."
If you have a pair of segments straddling a column of pieces, you can
move one piece from side to side without moving the other one. In
addition, when one of the two pieces comes to rest on a column, you
can move and flip the second one on your own.
Playing screen:
The bottom of the playing screen contains four numbers:
Score This is the number of points you currently have in the game. (In
the demo version of Faces, you will only be able to get 1500
points.)
Level This is the difficulty level that you are playing on. (In the
demo version of Faces, you are limited to play on Level 1.)
PF This is the number of "perfect faces" you have completed so far.
MF This is the number of "mixed faces" you have completed so far.
The number in the upper left hand corner of the screen is the number of
bonus points you have scored for the last completed face removed from the
playing screen.
The bar at the top of the screen indicates what face segments are
currently falling down the screen. The word will be either "chin," "lips,"
"nose," "eyes" or "top" and the number will be either 05, 06, 07 or 08.
These numbers correspond to the following personalities:
05 Margaret Thatcher
06 Mao Tse-Tsung
07 Indira Gandhi
08 Mikhail Gorbachev
Following are the keyboard commands you can use when playing Faces:
J, 4 or left arrow Move the piece(s) left
L, 6 or right arrow Move the piece(s) right
M, Spacebar, 2 or down arrow Increase drop speed
K or 5 Swap a pair of pieces
I, 8 or up arrow Flip the piece(s)
Esc Exit the game/demo
